ChemInform Abstract: Hydrogen Production from Ethanol Catalyzed by Group 8 Metal Complexes.

Abstract: ChemInform Abstract Different strategies for the catalytic thermal production of H2 from ethanol are discussed and demonstrated using various catalysts such as (I)-(IV). The role of base in, and the mechanisms of, these reactions are discussed; as are synergistic effects and reasons for the success of (III) and (IV) as catalysts for hydrogen production.

“…These include oxide catalysts, 42,57 metal-based (Ni, Cu, Co) catalysts, 14,[41][42][43]45,46,48,49,[58][59][60] metal-mixturebased catalysts; 13,39,61 and noble-metal-based catalysts. 14,23,40,[46][47][48]50,60,[62][63][64] Elemental compounds that had been attempted as catalysts for the ethanol reforming process are also shown in Figure 3 and marked with a circle. The figure shows that most of the catalysts attempted were metals, both base and noble compounds.…”

“…1−10 There are considerable efforts on liquid-phase conversion of alcohols at mild conditions since the explorative work by Cole-Hamilton. 11,12 Beller's group developed molecular complexes to decompose methanol into CO 2 and H 2 at low temperatures (65−95 °C) under ambient pressure. 13−15 Intensive efforts have been devoted to developing heterogeneous catalysts for ethanol dissociation in the liquid-phase in the presence of water and/or oxygen gas.…”
