ChemInform Abstract: DIAGRAM OF THE SOLID PHASES OF THE BISMUTH TRIOXIDE‐STRONTIUM OXIDE SYSTEM

Abstract: Mit Hilfe von DTA‐ und HT‐Röntgenanalysen werden im SrO‐reichen Teil des Systems die Verbindungen Srßi, O4, Sr3Bi2O6 und Sr2Bi2O5 (Pcmm, Z=4) charakterisiert.

“…Now consider the ten binary phases of the system represented by the sides of the triangle (figure 1). Counting clockwise from the CuO corner, they are; Sr4Cu701, [22], SrCuO, [23], Sr,Cu03 [24], X-a phase of rather large domain of existence with its compositional centre corresponding to the formula Sr7Bi201,, Sr3Bi,0,, SrBiO,,, [25], Sr3Bi409, SrBi204, Y-another wide ranging homogeneous phase with its midpoint composition reflected by the formula SrBi407, and, finally, CuBi204 [26].…”

“…In the case of M"Sr, the primary modulation wave vectors associated with Bi/M cation ordering are apparently commensurable (or locked in) with respect to the average structure. This is presumably responsible for the small metrical distortion of the underlying average structure from cubic to tetragonal (7). In the case of M"Ca, however, the q+0.2112 12* A primary modulation wave vectors are incommensurable with respect to the underlying bcc average structure.…”

“…In the case of M"Sr, Bi/Sr cation ordering has been reported as being responsible for the existence of a hightemperature tetragonal superstructure phase (I4/mmm, a& 13.24, c&4.26 A s ) which only transforms into the disordered bcc, ss phase just prior to melting (4,7). Rather more recently, Delicat et al (9) mentioned that electron diffraction patterns (EDPs) from the M"Ba, ss phase show weak incommensurate satellite reflections in addition to the set of strong Bragg reflections typical of the bcc lattice.…”

“…Numerous solid solutions, which adopt the Bi-Sr-O rhombohedral structural type (1), are obtained by cationic substitutions of M n+ for Bi 3+ [M=alkaline earth (1)(2)(3), lanthanide or Y (4-7), alkaline earth+lead (8)(9), La+ Ce+M II (M II =Ba or Pb), La+M VI +M II (M VI =Mo or W) (10)], in various Bi 2 O 3 -based oxide systems. Realized using X-ray diffraction data, the first structure determination, carried out on single crystal of the room temperature variety (b 2 ) of Bi 0.851 Sr 0.149 O 1.425 (11), was followed by different structural studies performed either on single crystal (3,12,13) or powder samples (14).…”

“…Each slab is constituted from two bismuth cationic layers Bi (2) surrounding a mixed layer containing the rest of bismuth Bi (1) and the other element(s) implicated in the phase. Two oxygen sites (O (1) and O (2) ) are located inside the slabs; the cohesion of layers in these blocks is principally due to O (1) ions which totally occupy a site located near the mixed cationic layers, while O (2) site near the Bi (2) layers is partially occupied. The remaining oxygen atoms as indicated by the compound formulae participate in the inter-block bonds.…”
