Abstract

140ChemInform Abstract Malic acid (Ia) and tartaric acid (Ib) are converted to the anhydrides (III) by reaction with the trihaloacetic anhydrides (II). Ring opening of (III) with 1-octanol or 1-octylamine (IV) yields the monoesters or monoamides (V) under simultaneous cleavage of the trihaloacetyl ester bond.
