Abstract

A Bismuth-Stabilized Metal-Rich Telluride Lu 9 Bi ≈ 1.0Te ≈ 1.0 -Synthesis and Characterization. -The title phase is synthesized by arc-melting of Lu and BiTe (obtained by heating a 1:1 molar mixture of Bi and Te at 800°C for 12 h) followed by annealing at 1070°C for 15 d (up to 90 vol.% yield). Lu9Bi0.99Te1.01 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmc21 with Z = 8 (single crystal XRD) and is isostructural with Sc 9 Te 2 . The structure contains columns of Lu in the form of condensed distorted trans-edge-sharing octahedral chains. The Te and Bi atoms lie within tricapped trigonal prisms of Lu. LMTO-type electronic structure calculations indicate a metallic nature and reveal strong polar bonding of Lu to both Bi and Te.
