Chemicals from textiles to skin: an in vitro permeation study of benzothiazole

Abstract: Despite the possible impact on human health, few studies have been conducted to assess the penetration and accumulation of contaminants in the skin after a prolonged contact with textile materials. In previous studies, we have shown that benzothiazole and its derivatives, as well as other potentially hazardous chemicals, often are present as textile contaminants in clothes available on the retail market. Since benzothiazole is a common contaminant in clothes, these can be a possible route for human chemical ex… Show more

“…Phthalates have been used as plasticizers, or as softening agents in polyvinyl-chloride (PVC). PVC is also used in decorative printing on garments and T-shirts [49].Chronic exposure to other chemicals used in textile production, such as benzothiazole or derivatives [50] and fabric dyes [51], are reported to induce allergies in other mucosa, such as the skin [52]. Low grade allergies can also contribute to 'dry eye-like' symptoms in the eye.…”

“…In einer in-vitro-Studie mit einer künstlichen Membran als Modell für menschliche Haut konnten binnen 24 h bis zu 62 % des in wässriger Lösung befindlichen Benzothiazols die Membran durchdringen, bis zu 37 % wurden in der Membran absorbiert [26]. [27,28].…”

“…For much demanding functionality of the products like wrinkle resistance, water repelling, fade resistance, and resistance to microbial invasion, there has been upsurge interest in apparel technology all over the world. Since the garments are in direct contact with human body, so the development of antimicrobial textile finish is highly indispensable and relevant [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Several challenges have been created for apparel researchers due to increasing global demand in textile as cotton fabrics provide ideal environment for microbial growth.…”

“…ere is an increasing demand on global scale for textile fabrics with antimicrobial finishes. Several antimicrobial agents as quaternary ammonium compounds, triclosan, and recently nanosilver biocide contents are available for textile finishing [8,9]. ey are synthetic in nature which creates environmental problems [10].…”
