“…Tungsten carbide is widely used in many industries, e.g. components in mining industries, dental burs, surgical tools and punches used in pharmaceutical industry (TAKAHASHI, M., KAMIYA, O., PASANG, T. 2017, AHMED, W., SEIN, H., JACKSON, M., POLINI, R. 2004, FAYYAZ, A., MUHAMAD, N., SULONG, A.B., RAJABI, J., WONG, Y.N. 2014.…”

“…However, most of them are not lubricious, which leads to high frictional losses. Thin diamond and diamond-like carbon coatings have been investigated to lubricate metal carbides [2][3][4]. Another approach to improve the tribological behavior of metal carbides is the carbide-derived carbon (CDC) process [5].…”

“…The WC-Co metal matrix composites are one of the most common hardmetals which have been widely used, particularly in applications that demand high wear resistance. However, due to their heterogeneous nature, in the presence of any aqueous solution encountered in applications such as wet drawing process, 1 dental burs, 2 punching dies, ball valves in the petroleum industry and cutting lumbers 3 and wire electrodischarge machining, 4 among others, their mechanical and wear properties are seriously affected as a result of the selective dissolution of the Co binder. Hochstrasser et al 5 have studied extensively the corrosion of WC-Co and pointed out that despite a considerable number of studies that were carried out on this system, the conclusions regarding the corrosion susceptibility found in literature are contradictory, due to the very complex reaction mechanisms of WC-Co corrosion.…”
