“…This method, based on a treatment in concentrated HNO 3 or mixtures of H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 , is generally used to attach functional groups to the defects on CNTs. 23,25,48 For example, acid functionalization of MWCNTs (i.e. COOH grafting) leads to improved MWCNT solubility in water allowing for homogeneous and stable dispersions.…”

“…The production of a suspension of SWCNT into a base fluid is not a straightforward process, as the SWCNT tend to agglomerate and settle with time. Thus, it was necessary to perform a chemical activation on the bulk SWCNT, based on the procedure described by Esumi et al, 24 and applied previously to produce stable water suspensions of SWCNT. The suspension was prepared with 1g of SWCNT in 40 ml of a mixture of HNO 3 and H 2 SO 4 (1:3 volume ratio) or HNO 3 and refluxed at 140°C.…”

“…A mixture of concentrated nitric and sulfuric acids in a molar ratio of 1:3, respectively was taken [27]. MWNTs were added to the acid mixture in an appropriate ratio and the mixture was refluxed for 20 min.…”
