Chemical solvent in chemical solvent: A class of hybrid materials for effective capture of CO2

Abstract: in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com)Amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) are chemical solvents with high reactivity to CO 2 . However, they suffer from drastic increase in viscosity on the reaction with CO 2 , which significantly limits their application in the industrial capture of CO 2 . In this work, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([emim][Ac]) which also exhibits chemical affinity to CO 2 but low viscosity, and its viscosity does not increase drastically after CO 2 absorption, was proposed as t… Show more

“…As a result, the viscosity of [emim][Ac] does not show drastic increase after the absorption of CO 2 . According to our previous report, the viscosity of [emim][Ac] increases only slightly from 24.6 to 40.9 cP after CO 2 absorption at 313.2 K and 1 bar . It is anticipated that [emim][Ac] is a promising additive to amine‐impregnated adsorbents.…”

“…These studies address the problems caused by the high viscosity of functionalized ILs to some extent. Moreover, previous studies by our group 22,23 and some other studies 24,25 all show that one of the effective methods for enhancing CO 2 capture performances is to produce a mixture of CO 2 adsorbents by mixing functionalized ILs with a conventional imidazole IL, which has low viscosity and an effective CO 2 absorption performance.…”

“…Diverse CO 2 separation techniques are available: spanning adsorption, 7,8 cryogenic separation, 9 membrane separation, 10,11 physical absorption 12,13 and chemical absorption. 14,15 Due to its high CO 2 removal efficiency, chemical absorption is a frequently used post-combustion capture technique. Among the varied alkanolamines employed in the chemical absorption process, monoethanolamine (MEA) is considered the benchmark solvent as a result of its high decarbonisation capacity (more than 90%).…”
