Chemical Rearrangement under Hydrothermal Conditions:  Formation of Polymeric Chains (CuX)2(dpiz) and (CuX)3(dpiz) (X = Cl, Br; dpiz = Dipyrido[1,2-a:2‘,3‘-d]imidazole) and Crystal Structures of [(CuCl)2(C10H7N3)] and [(CuBr)3(C10H7N3)]

Abstract: Reactions of CuX2 (X = Cl, Br) and 2,2‘-dipyridylamine (dpa) in superheated water (170 °C) led to a chemical rearrangement of dpa to dpiz (dpiz = dipyrido[1,2-a:2‘,3‘-d]imidazole = C10H7N3) and new Cu(I)-based coordination polymers (CuX)2(dpiz) and (CuX)3(dpiz). The crystal structures of [(CuCl)2(C10H7N3)] (I) and [(CuBr)3(C10H7N3)] (II) were reported. The two structures are built upon a common structural motif Cu2X4(C10H7N3).

“…The architectures of copper halides can be tuned at the molecular level so as to possess interesting topological structures and unusual electronic properties, for use in various components and with potential applications in the above-mentioned areas (Wang et al, 2003). More recently, owing to the introduction of the hydrothermal technique and various N-containing organic templating agents, a variety of novel organic-inorganic hybrid copper halides have been isolated with one-dimensional chain-like (Hammond et al, 1999;Lu et al, 1998) and two-dimensional layer-like structures (Chestnut et al, 1999;Bailey & Pennington, 2000). We present here the title compound, (I).…”

“…Up to date, most studies have shown that structure and properties of the organic-inorganic hybrid structure can be modified by many techniques, such as controlling the thickness of the inorganic portion, making substitutions on either the metal or halogen site, and selecting different organic cations [5,6]. As for metal-halide anion structures, there is a great diversity resulting from the condensation of MX 4 (M=divalent metal; X= Halogen atoms) octahedral into clusters, 1-D, 2-D or even 3-D networks through corner-, edge-or face connections [7][8][9][10][11].…”
