Chemical reaction of maritime pine sapwood (Pinus pinaster Soland) with alkoxysilane molecules: A study of chemical pathways

Abstract: The chemical modification of maritime pine sapwood (Pinus pinaster) with alkoxysilanes was studied according to three different pathways: carbamoylation with 3isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane, etherification with 3glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane and alcoholysis of n-propyltrimethoxysilane. Grafting was confirmed by weight percent gain calculations (WPG), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) as well as 13 C and 29 Si NMR CP MAS analysis. Signals of the grafted groups in the different spectra were assigned and the reacti… Show more

“…3). Silicone treated samples showed absorption bands at 1257 cm −1 assigned to ν(Si-C) stretch vibration, 1080 cm −1 and 1000 cm −1 assigned to skeletal vibrations δ(Si-O-Si) and 798 cm −1 assigned for ν(Si-C) and/or ν(Si-O) (Noll 1968, Sèbe et al 2004, Tinguat et al 2005, Zollfrank and Wegener 2002, Zollfrank 2001. After weathering the lignin band at 1505 cm −1 disappeared due to UV degradation, whereas the intensity of the silicone bands did not diminish (Fig.…”

“…Indeed, several studies have focused on etherification and esterification reactions between treatment chemical solutions and wood hydroxyl groups: formaldehyde resins (Goldstein et al 1959;Inoue et al 1993;Lukowsky 2002), dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) (Weaver et al 1960;Van Acker et al 1999); furfural alcohol (Westin et al 2004); maleic acid and glycerin (Uraki et al 1994); and citric acid (Hasan et al 2012). In addition to these reactions (etherification and esterification), bulking of the wood cell walls with hydrophobic polymers has been found to improve dimensional stability using organosilicone or alkoxysilane molecules (Sèbe and De Jéso 2000;Sèbe et al 2004).…”

“…However, release of formaldehyde, a carcinogenic volatile organic compound (VOC), in the atmosphere is an environmental and human health issue. Treatments with dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea (DMDHEU), furfuryl alcohol, organo-silane, maleic acid, and glycerol have been the subject of several studies (Goldstein et al 1959;Weaver et al 1960;Inoue et al 1993;Uraki et al 1994;Van Acker et al 1999;Sèbe and De Jéso 2000;Lukowsky 2002;Sèbe et al 2004;Westin et al 2004). Wood treatment with carboxylic acids is based on the same principle as that for the anhydrides, which is a nucleophilic substitution on the acyl carbon.…”
