Background:The growth in the production of biodiesel, which is principally fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), has been phenomenal in the last ten years because of the general desire to cut down on the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and also as a result of the increasing cost of fossil fuels.Objective:Establish whether there is any relationship between two different species (watermelon and muskmelon) within the same family (Cucurbitaceae) on fatty acid compositions and enumerate the different fatty acids in the two species.Materials and Methods:Extraction of fatty acids from the two species and preparation the extract to gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy analysis to determine the fatty acids compositions qualitatively and quantitatively.Results:The analyzed plants (watermelon and muskmelon) contain five saturated fatty acids; tetrdecanoic acid, pentadecanoic acid, hexadecanoic acid, heptadecanoic acid and octadecanoic acid with different concentrations, while muskmelon contains an extra saturated fatty acid named eicosanoic acid. The watermelon plant contains five unsaturated fatty acids while muskmelon contains three only, the two plants share in two unsaturated fatty acids named 9-hexadecenoic acid and 9-octadecenoic acid, the muskmelon plant contains higher amounts of these two acids (2.04% and 10.12%, respectively) over watermelon plant (0.88% and 0.25%, respectively).Conclusion:The chemical analysis of watermelon and muskmelon revealed that they are similar in saturated fatty acids but differ in unsaturated fatty acids which may be a criterion of differentiation between the two plants.

Résumé -Cent trente échantillons d'huiles et graisses extraites de 77 espèces oléagineuses du Bassin du Congo, appartenant à 35 familles botaniques, font l'objet de cette revue. Les familles Annonaceae, Burseraceae, Cucurbitaceae, Irvingiaceae, Mimosaceae et Palmaceae sont les mieux représentées, avec au moins cinq espèces examinées pour chacune d'elles. La teneur en matière grasse varie de 13 à 87 % avec 30 % de plantes faiblement oléagineuses, 42 % de plantes moyennement oléagineuses et 33 % de plantes fortement oléagineuses. Les matières grasses extraites de ces plantes sont essentiellement constituées des acides gras (AG) courants (C12 à C24) avec une prédominance nette des acides gras en C16 et C18. Un classement de ces matières grasses comme source de 1, 2 ou 3 acides gras majeurs a été proposé. Il distingue des huiles et graisses sources d'acides gras individuels (acides stéarique, oléique et linoléique), mais également des huiles et graisses sources des couples d'acides gras (laurique-mystique et stéarique-oléique). La situation la plus fréquente est celle du trio d'acides palmitique, oléique, linoléique, avec des teneurs individuelles en AG de l'ordre de 20 % et une teneur cumulée des trois AG au moins égale à 90 %. La représentation « radar-plots », en faisant ressortir les ressemblances et les différences entre les huiles et graisses étudiées, permet de faire un regroupement et éventuellement un classement de ces matières grasses par pôle d'intérêt. Un regroupement en fonction du profil des TAG majeurs a également été envisagé. Cette étude, qui regroupe une quantité importante de données obtenues sur une quarantaine d'années, met en évidence la grande diversité des espèces oléagineuses du Bassin du Congo et permet d'identifier, sur la base de leur composition chimique, les domaines potentiels d'utilisation des huiles et graisses examinées. Data on intra-specific variability for seed oil content, physical characteristics and fatty acid composition in Cucurbita moschata and Cucurbita argyrosperma are lacking in the scientific literature. We examined 528 genebank accessions of C. moschata and 166 accessions of C. argyrosperma -which included members of both subsp. argyrosperma and subsp. sororia -for seed oil content, oil physical characteristics and fatty acid composition. The oil of both species had near-identical viscosities, viscosity indices, colour and oxidative stabilities while the oil of C. argyrosperma had a slightly higher pour point, cloud point, percentage of free fatty acids and acid value when compared with C. moschata. Mean oil content values of the two species were similar at 28.7^/2.7 and 29.8^/2.6% for C. moschata and C. argyrosperma, respectively. The mean seed oil content of C. argyrosperma subsp. argyrosperma var. palmeri (32.1%) was significantly higher than that of the other taxa examined. The average (mean) percentage of total seed weight attributable to the kernel was 77.2% in C. moschata (n ¼ 34) and 74.5% in C. argyrosperma (n ¼ 46). The percentage of total seed weight attributable to the hull was correlated with seed oil content, in both species. Linoleic was the predominant fatty acid in all the samples analysed. Means for individual fatty acids in C. moschata were linoleic 48.5%, oleic 22.6%, palmitic 20.7% and stearic 7.5%. Means for individual fatty acids in C. argyrosperma were linoleic 47.3%, oleic 27.5%, palmitic 16.5% and stearic 8.0%.
