Chemical Profiling and Biological Evaluation of Nepeta baytopii Extracts and Essential Oil: An Endemic Plant from Turkey

Abstract: Nepeta baytopii is a poorly studied, endemic Nepeta species (Lamiaceae) of Turkey. For the first time, the biological activities (antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxicity properties) of the hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, water/methanol, and water extracts and essential oil prepared from N. baytopii aerial parts were assessed. Hydro-methanol (41.25 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) and water extracts (50.30 mg GAE/g), respectively showed the highest radical scavenging (94.40 and 129.22 mg Trolox equi… Show more

“…Screening of antioxidant properties of plants and plant-derived agents necessitate suitable methodologies that address the machineries of anti-oxidant activities and emphasis on the kinetics of the reactions including the antioxidants. Several studies evaluating the antioxidant activity of various samples of research interest using different methods in food and human health have been carried out [28,29,30,31,32].…”

“…The attractive flowers of the genus Nepeta have a pleasant scent. Due to their diuretic, anti-asthma, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, and antitussive characteristics, various Nepeta species are used in traditional medicines [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. It has been observed that cats become euphoric by the aromatic inflorescence of Nepeta genus plants [ 8 ].…”
