Chemical Profiles and Toxicity of Electronic Cigarettes: An Umbrella Review and Methodological Considerations

Abstract: Background: Electronic cigarettes (ECs) are often marketed as a safer alternative to combustible tobacco products. The global EC market has rapidly expanded since their introduction, creating an urgent need for research describing the toxicity and chemical composition of ECs. We conducted an umbrella review to summarize the evidence from existing systematic reviews (SRs). Methods: The search for SRs was conducted across four electronic databases through 25 January 2022. Methodological quality was assessed usin… Show more

“…A foremost reason is the fact that duration of NGP use is not su ciently long to induce chronic diseases (cancer would require more than 2 decades). ECs, also known as ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery systems), in its modern form have been invented in 2003 by the Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik and were rst introduced to the market in about 2007 (91). HTPs (with electric heating systems) have been marketed in the end of the 1990ies.…”

“…It is pointed out that only a limited range of e-cigarette liquids have been studied so far, and the level of their toxicity varies significantly in individual studies and is dependent on user and device characteristics [11]. It is also emphasized that toxicological monitoring of e-cigarettes is currently very challenging because they are not a subject to as strict regulations in this regard as conventional combustible tobacco products and is too early to fully evaluate the long-term health effects of e-cigarette, in particular for cancer [1,17].…”

“…While e‐cigarettes are often perceived as a less harmful alternative to traditional cigarettes (Marques et al, 2021; Travis et al, 2023), a cautious approach is warranted when assessing the comparative harm between electronic and traditional cigarettes. The harmful effects on oral soft tissues associated with the use of e‐cigarettes discussed in this article have biological plausibility in their pathogenesis related to dysbiosis.…”
