Various approaches to local prophylaxis have been tried to prevent bacterial colonization, including antimicrobial irrigation of the surgical field (such as sterilizing the ocular surface with povidone-iodine before ophthalmic surgery [14]), placement of antimicrobial carriers (e.g., intraoperative insertion of antibiotic-treated prosthetic devices in orthopedics [15]), dipping implants into antimicrobial solutions (e.g., immersion of a heart valve prosthesis into antibiotic solution before implantation [16]), and coating surgical implants with antimicrobials (17).
