Chemical Effects on Ion-Excited AluminumKX-Ray Spectra

Abstract: Five-MeV He and Ne ions were used to excite the aluminum Ke and KP parent and satellite x-ray spectra of Al metal, oxide, and nitride. Compared to the metal, the En line and Em satellites from the oxide were at energies a few tenths of an eV higher with helium-ion excitation, similar to observations with electron excitation. With neon bombardment, the Ke satellite lines were broader and the energy shifts reduced because of target-atom recoil effects. The chemical shifts in the KP spectra vary from negative in … Show more

“…The spectra (see Fig. The energies of the satellite peaks are consistent with Hartree-Fock-Slater calculations for multiply ionized atoms (Burkhalter et al, 1972;Watson et al, 1974). In this particular case, the first peak is composed of the usual Kal and Ka2 diagram lines whereas the peaks which follow are satellite peaks composed of Κα χ rays arising from configurations having n (one, two, .…”

“…An intriguing question arises when one compares the present results with the previous work of Burkhalter et al 14 These authors carried out similar measurements on Al and A1 2 0 3 but failed to observe the effect discussed above despite the fact that Al and A1 2 0 3 differ greatly in D v (for Al, D r = 0.18; for Al 2 O s , D F = 0.56). On the basis of the above conclusions, the unusually large D v of A1 2 0 3 would be expected to result in a considerable reduction of p L below that observed for Al.…”

“…The major significance of the correlation between the energies measured by us and the ones measured by other authors -whose results are shown comparatively in Table 2-, is the fact that these references relate to works performed with different excitation techniques. Thus, the fact that our results on Al are equal (considering the uncertainties of the measurements) to those of Burkhalter et al (Burkhalter et al, 1972), obtained with PIXE, reveals the intrinsic nature of the energies of the double-ionization lines, and its independence on the technique used to measure them. Identical energy positions are also observed in our own measurements with XRF and EPMA, confirming this independence on the excitation method.…”
