Chemical Effects on Core-Electron Binding Energies in Iodine and Europium

Abstract: A theoretical and experimental study was made of the shift in atomic· . . ·core-electron binding energies caused by the chemical enviro~~ent.Tiw models are presented to account for these "chemical shifts." The first uses an energy cycle to break the core-electron binding energies into a free-ion contribution and a classical Madelung energy contribution. The Madelung energy contributes a significant part of the binding energy shift. It can in principle be evaluated rigorously, although there is some ambiguity a… Show more

“…The photoelectron peaks of I(4d) in periodate (I +7 ) are known to be shifted to higher binding energy by 6.0 eV relative to the I -of the KI starting material, 1.1 eV higher then the shift observed for the I +5 of the iodate. 15 The periodate would therefore be easily detected in the XPS experiments if it were formed. In solution, iodide is known to rapidly consume ozone, and is thought to form hypoiodide (IO -).…”

“…Work function and charging correction will accelerate or decelerate all electrons equally, and so can be disregarded in the measurement of splittings within a single sample. 9 ' 10 The quantity Eh by definition the binding energy of an electron in the subshell, relative to the final hole state corresponding to Eh. If the ejection of an electron from a subshell can result in several final states of the system (i.e.…”
