Chemical Effects of the ³¹P(n,γ)³²P Reaction in K₄P₂O₇

Abstract

Anhydrous potassium pyrophosphate (K 4 P 2 0 7 ) was reactorirradiated under different well-defined conditions with the special aim of studying the possible formation of 32 P-labelled anions with three or more phosphorous atoms. The total yield (~7%) of normal tri-and polyphosphates was much lower than expected and previously found with similar compounds. It is suggested that condensed phosphates are primarily formed with 32 P in a reduced state, and that these species are partly annealed before the analyses. A tempering experiment demonstrates that thermal annealing proceeds via a breaking-down of species that are not of the P-O-P form, giving a transitory increase in the yield of the species with one P-atom only. Subsequently P 5 -0-P 6 is formed by recombination and oxidation. ZusammenfassungWasserfreies Kalium Pyrophosphat (K 4 P 2 0 7 ) wurde in einem Reaktor unter verschiedenen wohl definierten Bedingungen bestrahlt, mit dem besonderen Zweck die mögliche Bildung von mit 32 P markierten Anionen mit drei oder mehr Phosphoratomen zu untersuchen. Die totale Ausbeute (~7%) von normalen Tri-und Polyphosphaten war viel niedriger als erwartet und früher mit ähnlichen Verbindungen gefunden. Es wird vorgeschlagen, daß kondensierte Phosphate zuerst mit 32 P in einem reduzierten Zustand gebildet werden, und daß diese Verbindungen vor der Analyse teilweise ausgeheilt werden. Ausheilung bei stufenweise steigender Temperatur zeigt, daß thermische Ausheilung durch eine Zerstörung der Verbindungen, die nicht die P-O-P-Form haben, fortschreitet, indem sie eine vorübergehende Erhöhung der Ausbeute von Verbindungen mit nur einem P-Atom gibt. Danach wird P 5 -0-P 6 durch Rekombination und Oxydation gebildet. RésuméLe pyrophosphate de potassium anhydre (K 4 P 2 0 7 ) a été irradié en pile sous des conditions différentes bien définées, avec le but spécial d'étudier la formation éventuelle d'anions marqués de 32 P avec trois ou plus d'atomes de phosphore. Le rendement total (~7%) de tri-et polyphosphates normaux a été bien inférieur a ce qu'on avait attendu et trouvé autrefois avec des composés pareils. Il est proposé que des phosphates condensés sont d'abord formés avec du 3a P dans un état réduit et que ces espèces sont en partie recuites avant les analyses. Le recuit a température augmentant par degrés montre que le recuit thermique procède par une destruction des espèces qui n'ont pas la forme de P-O-P, ce qui donne une augmentation transitoire du rendement des espèces avec seulement un atome de P. Ensuite du P 5 -0-P 5 est formé par récombinaison et oxydation.
