Chemical Control of Basal Stem Rot Disease of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in Northern Nigeria

Abstract

Six fungicides (Aatopam-N, Aldrex T, Calixin M, PCNB, captan and captafol) were evaluated at 200 mg a.i.l"' for their effectiveness in reducing basal stem rot disease incited by Sclerotium rolfsii on tomato in pre-and post-inoculation soil drenches in the glasshouse. The results showed that only PCNB effectively reduced disease severity when apphed to soil 10 days before inoculation. Of the two application methods only pre-inoculation soil drenching with the fungicides was efficacious in reducing disease severity. In field trials conducted in Samani with Aldrex T, captan and PCNB, only PCNB was effective in combating the severity of the disease. It reduced the disease by about 88 % in one trial. ZusammenfassungChemische Kontrolle der basalen Stengelfaule bei Tomaten {Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) in Nordnigeria Sechs Fungizide (Aatopam-N, Aldrex T, Calixin M, PCNB, Captan und Captafol) wurden hei 200 mg a.i.l"' auf ihre Wirksamkeit hei der Reduzierung der basalen Stengelfaule bewertet, die durch Sclerotium rolfsii in Tomaten hei vor und nach der Inokulation durchtrankter Erde in einem . Gewachshaus verursacht wurde. Es erwies sich, dafi PCNB die Schwere der Krankheit nur reduzierte, wenn man es 10 Tage vor der Inokulation dem Boden zufiigte. Von den zwei Anwendungsmethoden reduzierte nur die Durchtrankung des Bodens mit den Fungiziden vor der Inokulation die Schwere der Krankheit wirksam. Bei Feldversuchen, die in Samaru mit Aldrex T, Captan und PCNB durchgefiihrt wurden, war nur PCNB bei der Bekampfung der Schwere der Krankheit wirksam.
