Chemical Constituents of the Lichen Stereocaulon azoreum

Abstract: Column chromatography of the acetone extract of the lichen Stereocaulon azoreum afforded several substances identified by chemical and spectral means; α-amyrin, lupeol, taraxerol, ursolic acid, ergosterol peroxide, brassicasterol, cerevisterol, stictic acid and an acetone-condensation derivative, lobaric acid. Furthermore atranorin, methyl β-orsellinate, atranol and, for the first time from the genus Stereocaulon, cryptostictic acid and the dibenzofuran, strepsilin were isolated.

“…Dibenzofurans : Strepsilin, with an [M − H] − ion at m/z 269.0455, was evidenced as peak 12 [ 30 ]. The main daughter ions of peak 12 were at m / z 149.0238 and 123.0450 a.m.u.…”

“…Stictic acid and its methylvinyl ketone derivative, isidiophorin, were isolated from the acetone extract. These two compounds have been consistently reported to be isolated simultaneously in the acetone fraction [ 22 – 24 ]. This suggests that, like compound 2 , isidiophorin was probably derived from stictic acid.…”

“…Lobaric acid was isolated with a yield of 0.67 % from the MeOH extracts when fractionated via silica gel column using hexane/CH 2 Cl 2 to CH 2 Cl 2 /MeOH as solvents. The dentification of the compound was carried out by using spectral data and its comparison with the reported data (Gonzilez et al, 1992).…”
