Steroidal alkaloids contain both steroidal and alkaloid properties in terms of chemical properties and pharmacological activities. Due to outstanding biological activities such as alkaloids and similar pharmacological effects to other steroids, steroidal alkaloids have received special attention in anticancer activity recently. Substituted groups in chemical structure play markedly important roles in biological activities. Therefore, the effective way to obtain lead compounds quickly is structural modification, which is guided by structure–activity relationships (SARs). This review presents the SAR of steroidal alkaloids and anticancer, including pregnane alkaloids, cyclopregnane alkaloids, cholestane alkaloids, C-nor-D-homosteroidal alkaloids, and bis-steroidal pyrazine. A summary of SAR can powerfully help to design and synthesize more lead compounds.

Neolitsea pallens (D. Don) Momiyama & H. Hara (Family: Lauraceae), commonly known as Pale Litsea, is an evergreen small tree, distributed in India at altitudes of 1500–3000 m. Traditionally utilized for various purposes, its leaves and bark are used as spices, and the plant is valued in preparing a hair tonic from freshly pressed juice. Secondary metabolites of the leaves have not comprehensively been analysed so far. The objective of the study was to determine the chemical composition of the leaves by analysing their 25% aqueous methanol extract with the aid of ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 56 compounds were identified in the study. Phenolics represented by phenolic acids, phenolic glycosides, proanthocyanidins, and flavonoids were the main components of the extract.

Diabetic and hypercholesterolemia are the most common metabolic disorders in the world. The purpose of the study was to assess the anti-diabetic and anti-cholesterol effect of water leaf extract of Lagerstroemia speciosa, Cinnamomum parthenoxylon, and Oroxylum indicum in vitro. Those three plants are often used by the local community to treat diabetes and hypercholesterol. The water extract’s active ingredients are steroids and flavonoids. The flavonoid content was reported to be 51.89, 110.92, and 63.41 mg QE/g respectively. In vitro studies on hemoglobin glycosylation, showed that 30 ppm aqueous leaf extract of L. speciosa, C. parthenoxylon, and O. indicum showed considerable inhibition of hemoglobin glycosylation by 12.06 %, 33.25%, and 73.96%, compared to a positive control (metformin) was 30.6 %. The in vitro anti-cholesterol properties of O. indicum and C. parthenoxylon could lower cholesterol by 33% compared to simvastatin by 33.104%. According to the study’s findings, the water leaf extracts of O. indicum and C. parthenoxylon have excellent pharmaceutical potential and might be used as herbal remedy to manage diabetes and cholesterol. To verify this work, more in vitro and in vivo research is required.
