Chemical constituents isolated fromPaeonia lactifloraroots and their neuroprotective activity against oxidative stress in vitro

Abstract: The methanolic extract of Paeonia lactiflora roots significantly protected primary cultures of rat cortical cells exposed to oxidative stress induced by H(2)O(2). Seven monoterpenes, paeonilactone-B (1), paeonilactone-C (2), paeoniflorigenone (3), benzoylpaeoniflorin (4), paeoniflorin (5), oxypaeoniflorin (6) and albiflorin (7), were isolated by bioactivity-guided fractionation and further separation using chromatographic techniques. Among them, compounds 2 and 4 significantly protected primary cultures of rat… Show more

“…Among them, the ethyl acetate fraction of Paeonia lactiflora (EA-PL) presented the highest potency in scavenging DPPH radical when used in combination with four solvent-extracted fractions from AME ( P <0.05), suggesting that EA-PL was rich in DPPH radical-scavenging activity (Fig.1A). Our results were in agreement with the previous report [19]. Herein, CIs were used to determine the possible interactive actions between the extracts or fractions.…”

“…PF, the major monoterpene glycoside responsible for the biological activity of Paeonia lactiflora Pallas, has a wide range of pharmacological functions, including neuroprotective effects (Kim et al, 2009). Nam and colleagues (2013) have found that PF can suppress LPS-induced overproduction of pro-inflammatory mediators from microglial cells (Nam et al, 2013).…”

“…Kim et al (2009) found that TGP significantly protected primary cultures of rat cortical cells exposed to oxidative stress induced by H 2 O 2 . Paeoniflorin was reported to exert a neuroprotective effect on glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in PC12 cells, via inhibiting oxidative stress and Ca 2+ overload (Mao et al, 2010).…”
