Chemical constituents from the endophytic fungus Trichoderma ovalisporum isolated from Panax notoginseng

Abstract: Strain PRE-5 was isolated from the root of the herbal plant Panax notoginseng and was identified as Trichoderma ovalisporum based on its sequence at the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. From the extracts of fermentation broth and mycelia of strain PRE-5, five compounds koninginin A (1), (E)-2,3-dihydroxypropyl octadec-9-enoate (2), shikimic acid (3), adenine ribonucleoside (4), and cytosine ribonucleoside (5) were obtained. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of their spectroscopic data. Al… Show more

“…However, Dang et al . [34] only reported one fungal isolate ( Trichoderma ovalisporum ) in P. ginseng . This result indicates that distribution of endophytes depends on plant species and geological locations.…”

“…In addition, fungi have advantages over plants, such as short cultivation time and large biomass production. However, there are very few reports on fungal endophytes in ginseng [32-34]. Therefore, an extensive investigation of fungal endophytes in ginseng can increase the opportunities of identifying potential fungi that can be used to produce bioactive compounds and control against pathogens.…”

“…Shikimic acid (197) (Figure 14 ), was obtained from the endophyte Trichoderma ovalisporum strain PRE-5 of the root of the herbal Panax notoginseng. The compound (197) is activity against S. aureus , Bacillus cereus , M. luteus and E. coli (Dang et al, 2010 ).…”

“…Endophytic fungi spend all or part of their life cycle in the host consuming nutrients from the intercellular fluids of the plants [10,11]. Some endophytic fungi produce a wide range of bioactive compounds that have commercial potential as important compounds for medicinal, agricultural and industrial purposes [9,12,13], such as alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, isocoumarin derivatives, quinones, flavonoids, and lignans. These compounds have diverse functions in plants, such as in protection against phytopathogens and the promotion of growth, which occurs due to the production of such phytohormones as auxin and gibberellins and the absorption of such nutrients as nitrogen and phosphorus from the soil [11,14].…”

However, there are only a few reports on the fungal endophytes present in ginseng [12,15,16]. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the diversity of the endophytic fungi in plants of different ages and different tissues of P. ginseng cultivated in Korea.…”
