Abstract: Edible coating gels developed from the Aloe vera plant have been used as a traditional medicine for about 3000 years. This work investigates the effects of an organic fertilizer enriched in Ca and Mg and two bacterial inoculants, applied alone and in combination, on soil fertility, plant growth, nutrition, and production of secondary metabolites, namely, acemannan and total phenolic compounds (TPCs), by Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller), under field cultivation. The first inoculum consisted of five native bacterial strains (Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter sp., and three strains of Pantoea sp.), characterized in vitro as putative plant growth promoters, isolated from local organic farming fields of Aloe vera. The second inoculant was a commercial product (BACTILIS-S and HUMOFERT) and consisted of three Bacillus species: B. pumilus, B. amyloliquefaciens, and B. subtilis. The organic fertilizer (HUMO-CAL M-8O) was a mixture of humic and fulvic acids, with an additional CaCO3 (40% w/w) and MgO (4% w/w). The most significant increase in the content of acemannan and TPCs was detected under single application of the organic fertilizer, which was linked to enhanced concentration of Mg and Ca in the leaf gel. The concentration of acemannan tended to be increased with the combined application of the organic fertilizer and microbial inoculants. TPCs were significantly increased in both single and combined treatments, seemingly related to Fe concentration in the leaf rinds.

Diabetic wound healing is a global medical challenge. Several studies showed that delayed healing in diabetic patients is multifactorial. Nevertheless, there is evidence that excessive production of ROS and impaired ROS detoxification in diabetes are the main cause of chronic wounds. Indeed, increased ROS promotes the expression and activity of metalloproteinase, resulting in a high proteolytic state in the wound with significant destruction of the extracellular matrix, which leads to a stop in the repair process. In addition, ROS accumulation increases NLRP3 inflammasome activation and macrophage hyperpolarization in the M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype. Oxidative stress increases the activation of NETosis. This leads to an elevated pro-inflammatory state in the wound and prevents the resolution of inflammation, an essential step for wound healing. The use of medicinal plants and natural compounds can improve diabetic wound healing by directly targeting oxidative stress and the transcription factor Nrf2 involved in the antioxidant response or the mechanisms impacted by the elevation of ROS such as NLRP3 inflammasome, the polarization of macrophages, and expression or activation of metalloproteinases. This study of the diabetic pro-healing activity of nine plants found in the Caribbean highlights, more particularly, the role of five polyphenolic compounds. At the end of this review, research perspectives are presented.

Effect of Three Kinds of Aloe Emodin Microcapsules Prepared by SDBS, OP-10 and TWEEN-80 Emulsifiers on Antibacterial, Optical and Mechanical Properties of Water-Based Coating for MDF

To investigate an impact of microcapsules on water-based coatings for a medium density fiberboard (MDF), three types of aloe emodin microcapsules prepared at a 3.0% concentration of SDBS, OP-10 and TWEEN-80 emulsifiers were added to the water-based coatings and applied on a MDF surface. Then, three sets of coatings were tested. Antibacterial properties of three groups of coatings on MDF surface increased with the addition of aloe emodin microcapsule content, and antibacterial properties of the water-based coating against Escherichia coli in the three groups were slightly superior to that of Staphylococcus aureus. The water-based coatings on the MDF surface with SDBS as the emulsifier showed the highest antibacterial rates of 74.1% and 66.0% against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. The antibacterial rates of 70.0% and 62.8% were achieved for the OP-10 emulsifier group, and 67.0% and 61.9% for the TWEEN-80 emulsifier group, respectively. The aloe emodin microcapsules prepared at a 3.0% concentration of SDBS, OP-10 and TWEEN-80 emulsifiers inhibit bacterial growth and improve the mechanical and optical properties of coatings. It supplies technical references for the utilization of aloe emodin microcapsules to the antibacterial coating on the surface of wooden furniture.
