Chemical compositions of the rhizome oils of twoAlpiniaspecies of Malaysia

Abstract: The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of the rhizomes of Alpinia aquatica Rosc. syn. Alpinia melanocarpa and Alpinia malaccensis Roscoe were analysed by capillary gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Eighteen compounds, representing 98.4% of the essential oil were identified in A. aquatica rhizome oil, with β-sesquiphellandrene in 36.5% being the major constituent, while 20 compounds representing 99.7% of the rhizome oil of A. malaccensis were identified, among which methyl (… Show more

“…This hypoglycemic effect is similar to the one reported for other plants [17,18,21,22]. Such effect may be explained in part by either a decrease in the rate of intestinal glucose absorption [23-25] or an increase in peripheral glucose utilization [24,25].…”

“…On the contrary, the trans geometry at C-1/C-2 in 2 with 3 J 1-2 = 16.0 Hz has significantly larger coupling constants compared to those of 1, further supported this finding [3]. genus [2,[6][7][8]. The isolated compounds consist of four chemical skeleton types; phenylbutenoid type (1, 2 and 3), phenylbutenoid dimer type (4), germacrene type (5) and elemane-type (6).…”

“…To date, various studies have been carried out to evaluate the antibacterial activities of P. macrocarpa on the crude extracts but there is no study has been conducted on the phytochemical composition 13 . We now report the antibacterial activity of P. macrocarpa on the basis of the crude extracts and the isolated constituents.…”
