Chemical composition variability of essential oils in the ontogenesis of some plants

Abstract: The ontogenetic variability of chemical composition of the essential oils of Erigeron canadensis L., Daucus carota L. ssp. carota and Anethum graveolens L. was studied. A distinct dependence between the ontogenetic stage and the contents as well as the chemical composition of essential oils was observed. The results obtained are of significance for determining the most favourable time limit for picking plant raw material.

“…For example, the oil obtained from the ripen umbels (seeds) of Daucus carota subsp. carota growing wild in Poland (Góra et al, 2002;Staniszewska et al, 2005) and Lituania (Mockute and Nivinskiene, 2004) was characterized by high contents of ␣-pinene and sabinene; the oil of Daucus carota from Corsica has methylisoeugenol and ␣-pinene as the main compounds; the major constituent of the oil from Turkey is carotol (Ozcan and Chalchat, 2007); the seed oils of Daucus carota subsp. maximus from Lebanon have methylisoeugenol, ␤-bisabolene and ␤-asarone as the major components (Saad et al, 1995); the oil from Daucus carota subsp.…”

“…Many factors can influence the essential oil content of plants. These variations are heredity, age of the plant, climatological environment, harvesting time, fertilization and irrigation regimens, distillation procedure and isolation method (Gora et al, 2002;Omidbaigi, 1997;Reineccius, 1994).…”
