The volatile oils from Marchantia convoluta were obtained by microwave extraction (ME) and phytosol extraction (PE) methods. The attained extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detector (GC-MS). The compounds were identified according to their retention indices and mass spectra (EI, 70 eV). A total of fourteen compounds were identified in ME extract accounting for 80.72% of total peak area. Isolongifolene (24.588%), 1, 2-benzenedicarboxylic acid, butyl cyclohexyl ester (10.768%), pyrene (9.328%) and hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester (8.570%) were the major compounds identified from ME extract. The analytical results of ME extract were compared with PE method. The ME extract was found to be markedly different from that of PE extract. A total of seven compounds in PE extract were identified accounting for 74.275% total peak area. 1-Phenanthrenecarboxylic acid, 1,2,3,4,4a,9,10, 10a-octahydro-1, 4a-dimethyl-7-(1-methylethyl) methyl ester were the major compounds.

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of maize (Zea mays L.) in diabetic patients in vitro. Three varieties (Golden, Sultan and Agatti: 85) were used to study the level of antioxidants and bio-molecules. Results showed that maize ears parts of all three varieties were more effective inhibitor in the oxidation process. Variety Golden silks was found to contain abundant activity of protease (22488 units/g f.wt.), α-amylase (390 units /g f.wt.), total sugar contents (307 mg/g f.wt.), and nonreducing sugar (288 mg/g f.wt.), and husks were rich in reducing sugar contents (16.9 mg/g f.wt.), and grains (kernels) in (15 mg/g f.wt.) protein content. Variety Sultan silks contained total phenolic content (38100 µM/g f.wt.), husk contained peroxidase activity (88655 U/g f.wt.), and grains manifested catalase (555 U/g f.wt.) activity. In varietyAgatti85 a highest activity of superoxide dismutase (292 U/g f.wt.) and malondialdehyde content (35 µM/g f.wt.) was recorded in silks. The findings of this research showed that maize probably inhibits the reaction of oxidation and decreases the complications occurring in diabetes mellitus. It was concluded that performed active parameters (total phenolics, SOD, peroxidase, catalase) may be responsible for higher antioxidant activity, which can be successfully used to reduce the extent of diabetes in the patients.

Abstract. An efficient ultrasonic assisted extraction procedure of phytosterols was established from corn silk (CS). The orthogonal test was applied to optimize the process parameters and a maximum phytosterols recovery as high as 10.59±0.12 mg/g was achieved by ultrasonic treatment for 55 min with liquid-solid ratio of 12:1 at 35 ℃, 220 w. The ultrasonic extraction temperature has the most significant effect on extraction yield of phytosterols.
