Pilosebaceous units found in the mammalian integument are composed of a hair follicle, the proximal portion of the hair shaft, a sebaceous gland, and the erector pili muscle. Pilosebaceous units release protective oils, or sebum, by holocrine secretion onto skin and hair through rupturing of sebocytes. Sebum is largely composed of polar and neutral lipids including glycerolipids, free fatty acids, sterols, wax esters, sterol esters, and squalene. In addition to these lipid classes, there is a small proportion of ionic/anionic glycerophospholipids (GPs). Composition of GPs on hair is rarely addressed despite their broad biological activities as signaling molecules and membrane stability. Furthermore, knowledge on GP composition in bats is lacking. Bat GP composition is important to document due to GP roles ranging from decreasing drag during migration to interaction with the integumentary microbiome. In this study, we analyzed GP molecular composition with liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry and compared GP content to previous literature. A total of 152 GPs were detected. Broad GP classes identified include lysophosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylcholine (PC), lysophosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidic acid, and phosphatidylglycerol, with PC being the most abundant class. The acyl components were consistent with fatty acid methyl esters and triacylglyceride moieties found in Eastern red bat sebum. GP proportions of the hair surface were different from a previous study on bat lung surfactants. This study determined the broad class and molecular species of bat sebum GPs that may be used in future ecological studies in vespertilionid bats.

ResumenLa fenología de los animales es influenciada de manera importante por la estacionalidad climática que promueve cambios en la abundancia de recursos alimenticios. Especies con dieta omnívora podrían no ser afectadas por la estacionalidad al poder utilizar diferentes recursos disponibles en el tiempo. Para probar esta hipótesis, describimos la fenología reproductiva de 3 especies de murciélagos cavernícolas con diferentes hábitos alimenticios en un bosque templado. Los murciélagos fueron capturados mensualmente a lo largo de 1 año con redes de golpeo y de niebla dentro de 2 cuevas, se encontró que Anoura geoffroyi que se alimenta de insectos, frutos, polen y puede consumir néctar de baja concentración de azúcar, presentó individuos reproductivos en todas las estaciones. Mientras que Leptonycteris yerbabuenae, una especie que se especializa en el consumo de néctar con alta concentración de azúcar y realiza migraciones en busca de la floración y fructificación de plantas quiropterofílicas y quiropterocóricas, estuvo activa reproductivamente en la estación seca/ cálida y al final de las lluvias, lo cual coincidió con la floración de plantas quieropterofílicas de la zona. Finalmente, Myotis velifer, que es insectívoro de los bordes de la vegetación, formó una colonia de maternidad al final de la estación seca/ cálida y al principio de la estación de lluvias. Concluimos que la estacionalidad climática afecta en menor manera la fenología de murciélagos con dieta omnívora en bosques templados.Palabras clave: México; Michoacán; Phyllostomidae; Vespertilionidae; Reproducción AbstractAnimals' phenology is strongly influenced by the climatic seasonality that promotes changes in the abundance of food resources. Species with omnivorous diet may not be affected by seasonality, being able to use different resources over time. To test this hypothesis, we describe the reproductive phenology of 3 species of cave bats with different diet habits in a temperate forest. Bats were captured monthly over 1 year with batting and mist nets traps inside 2 caves, finding that Anoura geoffroyi, a bat that feeds insects, pollen and can consume nectar with low sugar concentration, presented reproductive individuals at all seasons. Volatile Urinary Signals of Two Nocturnal Primates, Microcebus murinus and M. lehilahytsara

Mouse lemurs are small, nocturnal, arboreal solitary foragers and are endemic primates of Madagascar. This lifestyle and their high predation risk can explain why mouse lemurs rely heavily on olfaction for intraspecific communication. As they often use urine for this purpose, we investigated dichloromethane extracts of the urine of two mouse lemur species, the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) and the Godman's mouse lemur (M. lehilahytsara), using gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. We detected 977 different volatile compounds of different compound classes in 22 urine extracts obtained from nine M. murinus (four males, five females) and nine M. lehilahytsara (three males, six females) individuals. We compared the volatile profiles of the sexes and species using principal component analyses and discriminant function analyses and detected a significant difference in the urinary profiles of males and females and in the profiles of M. murinus and M. lehilahytsara. These very complex sex-and species-specific signatures could be used for distance communication in the context of species recognition, for mate search and in male-male competition. Our study provides important mechanistic insights into complex chemical signaling pathways in primates that are mirrored, in the case of mouse lemurs, by their extraordinarily rich repertoire of olfactory receptors. The production of highly informative olfactory signals may be complementing the complex acoustic signaling system of these solitary foragers suggesting the existence of a multimodal communication network that should be highly beneficial for any species living in dispersed social networks.
