Pogostemon cablin Benth. (patchouli) is an important herb which possesses many therapeutic properties and is widely used in the fragrance industries. In traditional medicinal practices, it is used to treat colds, headaches, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, insect and snake bites. In aromatherapy, patchouli oil is used to relieve depression, stress, calm nerves, control appetite and to improve sexual interest. Till now more than 140 compounds, including terpenoids, phytosterols, flavonoids, organic acids, lignins, alkaloids, glycosides, alcohols, aldehydes have been isolated and identified from patchouli. The main phytochemical compounds are patchouli alcohol, α-patchoulene, β-patchoulene, α-bulnesene, seychellene, norpatchoulenol, pogostone, eugenol and pogostol. Modern studies have revealed several biological activities such as antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, antithrombotic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, antimutagenic, antiemetic, fibrinolytic and cytotoxic activities. However, some of the traditional uses need to be verified and may require standardizing and authenticating the bioactivity of purified compounds through scientific methods. The aim of the present review is to provide comprehensive knowledge on the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of essential oil and different plant extracts of patchouli based on the available scientific literature. This information will provide a potential guide in exploring the use of main active compounds of patchouli in various medical fields.

This study aimed to evaluate the aromatic characteristic of patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) by near‐infrared spectroscopy combined with chemometric treatments. The study used 84 oil samples collected from around Indonesia, namely in Konawe, Kolaka, Bogor, Garut, Aceh, Jambi, and Masamba. Several pretreatments were used to process the spectral data, together with the application of partial least squares. The spectrum wavelength applied was between 1000 and 2500 nm. The spectra data were separated to develop two models based on their physical and chemical properties (Bogor, Garut, Konawe, and Kolaka in the first model; Aceh, Jambi, and Masamba in the second one). Liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry (LC‐MS) was used as a reference method. Patchouli alcohol was established as the main chemical compound of this aromatic oil. The best calibration for the first model was that with mean center normalization as a data pretreatment, while for the second model, it was the one using the second derivative. Both models had a correlation coefficient higher than 0.90 and a coefficient of variation lower than 2.98%. In conclusion, near‐infrared spectroscopy can be employed as an accurate tool to determine the characteristic of patchouli oil.

Pogostemon cablin Benth. (patchouli, PA), a plant of the Lamiaceae family is a well-known traditional medicine. In China, India, Japan, and Malaysia, PA is presently cultivated extensively and used to remove dampness, relieve fever, relieve diarrhea, stop vomiting, and stimulate the appetite (1). Essential oil (EO), secondary metabolites, and biological activities of some plants are one of the most important medicinal substances of patchouli. Pharmacological studies have suggested that the PA essential oil (PAEO) has a wide spectrum of activity, e.g. anti-inflammatory (2-4), anti-oxidative (5, 6) and antimicrobial activities (7, 8). However, due to its unpleasant odor, poor water solubility, volatility, and instability, these limited the therapeutic effect and application of PAEO (9, 10).Cyclodextrin (CD) is a cyclic oligosaccharide compound obtained by linking 6 to 12 glucose molecules after enzymatic hydrolysis of starch. The structure is hollow cylindrical with a hydrophobic inside (11). Common CDs are made up of 6, 7, and 8 glucose molecules connected by α-1, 4 glycosidic bonds, which are called α-CD, β-CD, and γ-CD, respectively. CD inclusion technology can encapsulate drug molecules into the hollow structure of CD to improve drug solubility, stability, and bioavailability (12,13).Saturated aqueous solution method ( 14), ultrasonic method (15), and grinding method ( 16) are commonly used to prepare the inclusion complex. The saturated aqueous solution method has simple operation and low requirements for equipment and has been widely used in laboratory preparation and industrial production.The aim of this work is to prepare PAEO-β-CD inclusion complex using a saturated aqueous solution method and optimize the preparation conditions by orthogonal test design.
