Chemical composition of Callistemon citrinus (Curtis) Skeels aerial part essential oil and its pharmacological applications, neurodegenerative inhibitory, and genotoxic efficiencies

Abstract: Callistemon citrinus aerial part essential oil (CCEO) was analyzed for chemical compositions using GC/MS. Pharmacological activities such as neurodegenerative inhibitory, antioxidant, anti‐inflammatory, antimicrobial, and acetylcholinesterase activities were evaluated using the standard methodologies. Genotoxicity was investigated using Allium cepa assay. GC/MS analysis identified 27 compounds; eucalyptol (55.40%) was the major component. Radical scavenging activity showed IC50 value of 16.71 μg/mL. Protein de… Show more

“…Plant essential oils (EOs) are volatile aromatic substances extracted from various aromatic plants, and their antioxidant, antibacterial and other activities have been studied by many researchers (Burt, 2004; Brnawi et al ., 2018; Gogoi et al ., 2021a). In recent years, due to the potential health risks of chemical preservatives, plant EOs as an alternative have been a trend in food preservation (González‐Alonso et al ., 2020; Osaili et al ., 2021).…”

“…The winter leaf oil showed AChE inhibitory activity with IC 50 value of 0.208 ± 0.011 µg/mL, this compared to the standard donepezil (IC 50 = 0.045 ± 0.002 µg/mL). Other Callistemon species showed potential for neuroprotection through AChE inhibitory activity, as the essential oil of C. citrinus aerial part, containing eucalyptol (55.40%) as the major component, showed a strong AChE inhibitory with an IC 50 value of 6.335 μg/mL, slightly lower than that of galanthamine (IC 50 = 6.652 µg/mL) 25 . Commercially available 1,8-cineole and α -pinene showed AChE inhibitory activities with IC 50 values of 0.015 and 0.022 mg/mL, respectively that were 0.017–0.025 fold of galantamine 38 .…”

“…This compound also has several industrial applications, mainly in the production of pharmaceuticals and as a flavoring of foods and toothpastes [ 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 ]. Recent studies also point to the use of this compound as a biosolvent and anti-corrosion agent, as it is an ecological alternative to synthetic products [ 68 , 69 , 70 ].…”
