Chemical Composition of Essential Oilsof Thymus and Mentha Speciesand Their Antifungal Activities

Abstract: The potential antifungal effects of Thymus vulgaris L., Thymus tosevii L., Mentha spicata L., and Mentha piperita L. (Labiatae) essential oils and their components against 17 micromycetal food poisoning, plant, animal and human pathogens are presented. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodestillation of dried plant material. Their composition was determined by GC-MS. Identification of individual constituents was made by comparison with analytical standards, and by computer matching mass spectral data with… Show more

“…The main constituents in the leaf essential oil of Curcuma longa, identified are Terpinolene (more than 26 %), 1,8-Cineole, α-Phellandren, Terpinen-4-ol and Sabinyl acetate are present only as trace constituents. Sokovic et al (2009) (Kaul et al, 1976;Lahariya and Rao, 1979) but have not described the nature of the toxic action (fungistatic/fungicidal). To the best of our knowledge, this the first report where the waste leaves of Curcuma longa L. which has no commercial value has been used for the extraction of essential oil and their antidermatophytic use, thereby making it economical.…”

“…It is known that Gram positive bacterial species are more susceptible to antimicrobial agents than Gram negative bacteria, and that fungi are more susceptible than bacteria in general. 42,43 Thus, the susceptibility of microorganisms to external agents depends not only on their properties, but also on the microorganism itself. …”
