Chemical Composition of Essential Oils from Three Rhododendron Species and Their Repellent, Insecticidal and Fumigant Activities

Abstract: In order to assess the repellent, contact, and fumigant properties of three essential oils (EOs) from Rhododendron species in China against adults of Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne, Sitophilus oryzae, this study analyzed their chemical components. The three EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation from leaves of Rhododendron species, including R. davidsonianum, R. heliolepis and R. strigillosum. Sesquiterpenoids and monoterpenes were the main components of the three EOs that were detected by GC/MS a… Show more

“…The essential oil showed repellent activity up to a concentration of 11 µg/cm 2 , which is in accordance with those of samples considered significantly active in previous works [36,37]. These results can be explained by the chemical composition of the essential oil, which is rich in substances known to be active against T. castaneum.…”
