Chemical Composition, Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of the Essential Oil from Cistus ladanifer L.

Abstract: Cistus ladanifer L. is a plant widely used in folk medicine to treat various illnesses. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the plant flourishing time harvest on the chemical composition and the antimicrobial effect of its essential oil. Chemical analysis of the essential oil was carried out using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The antibacterial and antifungal proprieties were tested against four selected bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhi, Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacte… Show more

“…The difference in chemical composition is caused by several factors, such as species, origin, growth stage, environmental influences and genetic background. Generally, the influence of these factors on the biosynthetic pathways induces changes in qualitative and quantitative terms of the characteristic majority compounds, which lead to the existence of different chemotypes distinguishing EOs from different origins [ 19 , 45 ].…”

“…Widely used in the Arribes del Duero, for bone fractures of sheep and goat limbs, after resetting the bone, leaves of Cistus ladanifer L., glued with its own exudate (labdanum), are placed on the limb, which is splinted using two branches (without leaves) tied with twine, also used to treat wounds of cattle and horses ( 42 ). The essential oil of C. ladanifer showed remarkable antimicrobial activity ( 115 ).…”

“…The microdilution technique was used to determine the minimal inhibitory doses of essential oils. It was carried out following a modified version of El Karkouri et al protocol [ 30 ]. In this test, two-fold serial dilutions of the essential oils ranging from 4 to 0.031% ( v / v ) were made in Mueller Hinton Broth (MHB), supplemented with 0.15 % ( w / v ) of bacteriological agar (Biokar diagnostics, Beauvais, France).…”
