Chemical Composition and Transgenerational Effects on Caenorhabditis elegans of Seasonal Fine Particulate Matter

Abstract: While numerous studies have demonstrated the adverse effects of fine particulate matter (PM) on human health, little attention has been paid to its impact on offspring health. The multigenerational toxic effects on Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) were investigated by acute exposure. PM2.5 and PM1 samples were collected and analysed for their chemical composition (inorganic ions, metals, OM, PAHs) in different seasons from April 2019 to January 2020 in Lin’an, China. A higher proportion of organic carbon co… Show more

“…The NO 3 − /SO 4 2− ratio was often used to determine the main source of atmospheric particulate pollution. When the ratio was larger than 1, it meant that mobile sources, like car exhausts, dominated the emission source; when it was less than 1, it meant that stationary sources, such as coal combustion, dominated [ 4 , 30 ]. The NO 3 − /SO 4 2− ratios of the PM 2.5 samples from the residential, industrial, and traffic sources were 0.99, 1.35, and 1.30, respectively.…”
