Chemical composition and rumen degradability of byproducts available in the Amazon region

Abstract: This study evaluated the chemical composition and ruminal degradability of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap) and crude protein (CP) in byproducts of African oil palm (palm cake, kernel or fiber), macaúba (pulp cake and kernel cake), acai (acai fruit), babassu (kernel cake) and pineapple (peel, crown and bagasse silage). Nineteen rumen-fistulated sheep were kept in individual stalls, receiving a daily diet composed of elephant grass silage and corn and soybean concen… Show more

“…Furthermore, lipid extracts from A. crispa fruits were shown to have properties protecting against lung and kidney diseases in mice (Mena et al 2019;Oyarzábal-Yera et al 2019). The use of kernel and pulp cakes as animal feed is still under exploration, e.g., with regard to rumen degradability in sheep and inclusion of pulp cake in the diets of broilers and rabbits (Ferreira et al 2019a(Ferreira et al , 2019bNeta et al 2019).…”

“…From the fermentation point of view, babassu cake can be used as an alternative feed for ruminants, especially that require relatively high metabolisable protein levels (dos Santos‐Neta et al ., 2019). In the literature, this biomass had already been pointed as an alternative feed in ovine (de Sá et al ., 2015a), caprine (Oliveira et al ., 2021), dairy cattle (Ferreira et al ., 2022; Zanine et al ., 2023), and for lactating cows' diets, without depreciating their daily milk production (de Araújo et al ., 2021).…”
