Chemical Composition and Possible in Vitro Phytotoxic Activity of Helichrsyum italicum (Roth) Don ssp. italicum

Abstract: The chemical composition of the essential oil of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) Don ssp. italicum, collected in the National Park of Cilento and Diano Valley, Southern Italy, was studied by means of GC and GC/MS. Forty four compounds of 45 constituents were identified in the oil, mainly oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The essential oil was evaluated for its potential in vitro phytotoxic activity against germination and early radicle elongation of radish and garden cress. The radicle elongation of radish was significan… Show more

“…For these reasons, our research group carried out a series of studies on the possible biological properties of aromatic plants that are rich in active principles and are considered a primary source of potential active compounds [7][8][9][10][11][12]. Furthermore, considering the interest in natural products for different commercial fields, a thorough knowledge of the biological and safety profiles of essential oils can also provide results of economic importance [13].…”

“…Some Helichrysum species are also found in South‐West Asia, southern India, Sri Lanka and Australia . Members of the genus Helichrysum (Asteraceae) are usually aromatic herbs or dwarf perennial shrubs, growing at a wide range of altitudes from the sea level up to 1700 m a.s.l., preferably on sandy or loamy soils . The plants have a high level of polymorphism, mainly in the habitus, leaves and flowers …”
