Chemical Composition and In Vitro Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Marrubium vulgare L.

Abstract: In this study, the polyphenol content and the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of hydroethanolic (MVE) and hydroacetonic (MVA) leaf extracts of Marrubium vulgare L. were examined. The results indicated that the total phenolic content was higher in MVA (112.09 ± 4.77 mg GAE/DW) compared to MVE extract (98.77 ± 1.68 mg GAE/DW). The total flavonoid content was also higher in MVA extract (21.08 ± 0.38 mg QE/g DW) compared to MVE (17.65 ± 0.73 mg QE/g DW). Analysis of the chemical composition revealed the p… Show more

“…The leaves of S. elaeagnifolium were used to generate the hydro-ethanolic extract (HEE) and hydro-acetonic extract (HAE); 10 g of the powdered leaves were combined with 70 mL of ethanol and 30 mL of distilled water to obtain the HEE, and 70 mL of acetone and 30 mL of distilled water to obtain the HAE [24]. Before filtering the extracts, they were macerated for 72 h. A rotary evaporator was used to evaporate the solvent.…”

“…The variation in chemical composition and polyphenol and flavonoid concentration between both the two extracts can be used to justify the difference in the ability to reduce iron between the two extracts. It's conceivable that the extraction agent caused this result [24].…”

“…These compounds are used as precursors for the synthesis of valuable antibiotics to treat several infections in the skin, urinary, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems [ 8 , 9 ]. Despite the development of a large number of antibiotics against several infectious diseases, the microbial resistance is continuously increasing all over the world [ 10 ]. The speedy rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria is constantly pressurizing the global healthcare system for a few decades.…”

“…Phytomedicines can be developed based on the traditional use of plants [ 1 ]. The presence of alkaloids, coumarins, saponins, flavonoids, fixed oils, and phenolic compounds is responsible for the medicinal activity of plant species [ 2 , 3 ]. These natural chemical compounds can also serve society as healing, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory agents [ 4 , 5 ].…”
