Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oil from Pyrethrum pulchrum Ledeb.

Abstract: The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil from the aerial parts of Pyrethrum pulchrum Ledeb. were investigated. Dried plant material was hydro-distillated yielding 0.1% of essential oil. The oil was analyzed by GC-MS techniques. Fifty-five compounds were identified representing 99.7% of the total oil composition. Camphor was the predominant compound (33.9%) followed by linalool (21.1%) and α-pinene (9.0%). The antimicrobial activity of the oil was determined using the disk diffus… Show more

“…Moreover, natural antimicrobial – essential oil of the Pyrethrum pulchrum Ledeb. was investigated by Erdenetsogt et al ( 2019 ). The essential oil, which was mostly composed of camphor (33.9%), linalool (21.1%), and α‐pinene (9.0%), indicated a medium antibacterial activity against bacteria P. aeruginosa , M. vaccae , and E. faecalis .…”

“…Except for our previous chemical investigations of P. pulchrum that focused on the identification of constituents of the essential oil 12 and the characterization of 14 flavonoids along with their biological activities 13 , no chemical studies have been conducted on this species, to the best of our knowledge.…”

“…Except for our previous chemical investigations of P. pulchrum that focused on the identification of constituents of the essential oil [12] and the characterization of 14 flavonoids along with their ABSTR AC T Pyrethrum pulchrum is a rare Mongolian plant species that has been traditionally used as an ingredient in various remedies. Bioactivity-guided fractionation performed on the methanol extract of its aerial parts led to the isolation of 2 previously undescribed guaianolide-type sesquiterpene lactones, namely 1β,10β-epoxy-8α-hydroxyguaia-3,11( 13)-dien-6,12-olide (1) and 1,8,10-trihydroxyguaia-3,11( 13)-dien-6,12-olide (2), along with the isolation or chromatographic identification of 11 compounds, arglabin (3), 3β-hydroxycostunolide (4), isocostic acid (5), (E)-9-(2-thienyl)-6-nonen-8-yn-3-ol ( 6), (Z)-9-(2-thienyl)-6-nonen-8-yn-3-ol (7), N 1 ,N 5 ,N 10 ,N 14 -tetra-p-coumaroyl spermine (8), chlorogenic acid (9), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (10), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid methyl ester (11), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (12), and tryptophan (13). Their structures were assigned based on spectroscopic and spectrometric data.…”
