Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Activity of the Essential Oil of Menthae piperitae L.

Abstract: The subject of this study was the examination of the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of peppermint oil (Menthae piperitae L.), that was produced from the plant collected from the plantation in the city of Banja Luka. To examine the chemical composition of the Mentha piperita essential oil we used the GC-FID method. On it’s chromatogram it was clearly shown that the main components of the oil were menthole with the content of 43.66%, menthone 20.02%, iso-menthone 7.73%, following by 1,8-cineole … Show more

“…The results show that Mentha Piperita essential oil reflects the excellent antibacterial activity against all bacterial cultures used in this study P. aeruginosa had a 12 mm inhibition zone, while S. aureus had a 37.66 mm inhibition zone. Peppermint oil may show effectiveness in treating bacterial infections, further reducing the use of antibiotics [69]. The use of peppermint essential oil (EO) in a chitosan nano gel to shield plaque from S. mutans caused caries was investigated.…”

Kalaba et al 2015;Marjanović-Balaban et al 2018;Stanojević et al 2011;Stanojević et al 2015;Stanojević et al 2016a;Stanojević et al 2016d).…”

“…The antimicrobial activity of essential oils, particularly mint oils, has been widely evaluated with many pathogenic bacteria due to their bioactive compounds [34][35][36][37][38]. The current study targeted Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) F18, which is one of the most important pathotypes causing post-weaning diarrhea and thus increasing the use of antibiotic treatment in weaned pigs [39,40].…”
