Chemical Composition and Anti-inflammatory Activity of Algerian Thymus vulgaris Essential Oil

Abstract: This work aims to elucidate the chemical composition of two essential oil (EO) samples obtained from the leaves of Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) collected in two regions of Northwestern Algeria (Tlemcen and Mostaganem) and to assess their in vivo acute toxicity and anti-inflammatory activity. Sixty-six compounds could be identified by means of simultaneous GC-FID and GC-MS, accounting for 99.3% of total thyme oil of Mostaganem (EO.TM) and 99.0% of Tlemcen (EO.TT). In both samples, thymol was the major compone… Show more

“…Our findings corroborated those for T. vulgaris from Chlef (Northwestern Algeria), that identified carvacrol as the major component (48.4%) (16). However, in our previous study in the same plant harvested from the same regions in May 2014, both oils (EO.TM and EO.TT) were predominated by thymol (59.5 and 67.3%, respectively) (17).…”

“…In an in vivo study, Abdelli et al (2017) analysed thyme oil in a dose dependent manner (100, 200 and 400 mg/kg) against mice with carrageenan-induced paw edema to determine the anti-inflammatory activity. Paw thickness was found reducing at a dose of 400 mg/kg.…”

“…Thymus vulgaris L. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic plant whose essential oil already has various pharmacological activities described such as antimicrobial [91], anthelmintic [92] and anti-inflammatory [93]. The GC-MS analysis of Thymus vulgaris essential oil (TVEO) revealed the presence of more than 50 metabolites.…”
