Chemical, Clinical, and Immunological Studies on the Products of Human Plasma Fractionation Xxx. The Use of Salt-Poor Concentrated Human Serum Albumin Solution in the Treatment of Chronic Bright's Disease 123

Abstract: Much of the disability induced by chronic Bright's disease, particularly during the nephrotic stage, is attributable to thte coexistent disturbances in protein metabolism. The latter may be characterized as follows: 1, proteinuria; 2, hypoalbuminemia; and 3, depletion of tissue protein stores. During the past few years, numerous attempts have been made to correct the hypoalbuminemia, depletion of body protein stores, and attendant edema in patients with nephrotic syndromes by administering human plasma intrave… Show more

“…It should be noted, however, that this antidiuresis was associated with a decrease in the concentration of total milliosmols in the urine. These responses with respect to the rates of excretion of sodium and water associated with infusions of hyperoncotic solutions of albumin in normal subjects are in striking contrast to the responses in patients with the nephrotic syndrome and toxemias of pregnancy (10)(11)(12)(13).…”

“…Both the chemical characteristics of this preparation and the response of edema, plasma protein levels, and nitrogen balance of certain stages of chronic Bright's disease to its administration have been described in previous papers (14,15). Here, in a small group of patients with varying types of hepatic cirrhosis, we have attempted to answer the following questions:…”

“…Initially, the main reason for developing plasma fractionation on a large scale was for purification of albumin. Albumin is used for treating shock, hypoproteinemia (Janeway et al, 1944), acute or chronic nephritis (Thorn & Armstrong, 1945) and hepatic cirrhosis (Thorn et al, 1946) as well as other disorders.…”
