This article summarizes the results of a research study that was focused on the possibility of removing Cr (VI) from aqueous solution, using low-cost waste biomaterial in a batch mode. A set of seven biosorbents was used: Fomitopsis pinicola, a mixture of cones, peach stones, apricot stones, Juglans regia shells, orange peels, and Merino sheep wool. Three grain fractions (fr. 1/2, fr. 0.5/1.0, and fr. 0/0.5 mm) of biosorbents were studied. The aim was to find the most suitable biosorbent that can be tested with real samples. The influence of other factors on the course of biosorption was studied as well (chemical activation of the biosorbent, pH value, rotation speed during mixing, temperature, and the influence of biosorbent concentration). The use of chemical activation and adjustment of the pH to 1.1 to 2.0 make it possible to increase their sorption capacity and, for some biosorbents, to shorten the exposure times. Two kinetic models were used for the analysis of the experimental data, to explain the mechanism of adsorption and its possible speed control steps: pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model seems to be the most suitable for the description of the experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters suggest that the biosorption was endothermic and spontaneous. In the biosorption equilibrium study, the adsorption data were described by using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The Langmuir model was applicable to describe the adsorption data of all biosorbents. Both models are suitable for chemically treated sheep fleece and peach stones.

RESUMOA demanda pelo tratamento de efluentes contendo vários compostos tóxicos, como metais potencialmente tóxicos, corantes, e alimentos orgânicos decorre desde a Revolução Industrial. Uma alternativa de baixo custo e boa eficiência para a remoção dos íons metálicos é a biossorção. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar a capacidade e eficiência de remoção de metais potencialmente tóxicos em efluentes de laboratório de pesquisa em química utilizando a casca do pequi in natura em coluna filtrante de leito fixo. A biomassa foi caracterizada pelas seguintes variáveis químicas: pH em água, pH em KCl, ponto de carga zero e determinação dos grupos ácidos e básicos presentes na superfície da biomassa. Foi realizado um ensaio em coluna de leito fixo, na primeira fase (processo de biossorção), ocorreu à saturação dos biossorvente somente com a passagem de água deionizada, após a saturação foi iniciado o ensaio de biossorção. O sistema de filtragem foi mantido com fluxo contínuo por 5 horas, o efluente foi recolhido a cada 1 hora e armazenado em frascos de polietileno de cor escura, posteriormente foi realizada a determinação das concentrações espécies metálicas Zn 2+ , Mn 2+ , Cd 2+ e Ni 2+ por Espectrometria de Absorção Atômica por Chama (FASS). A biomassa apresentou capacidade e eficiência de remoção dos íons metálicos de forma favorável.Palavras-chave: Biomassa, Resíduos agroindustriais, Efluentes de laboratório de pesquisa em química.

In the present work, an effort has been made to utilize Phyllanthus emblica (PE) fruit stone as a potential biomaterial for the sustainable remediation of noxious heavy metals viz. Pb(II) and Cd(II) from the aqueous solution using adsorption methodology. Further, to elucidate the adsorption potential of Phyllanthus emblica fruit stone (PEFS), effective parameters, such as contact time, initial metal concentration, temperature, etc., were investigated and optimized using a simple batch adsorption method. It was observed that 80% removal for both the heavy metal ions was carried out within 60 min of contact time at an optimized pH 6. Moreover, the thermodynamic parameters results indicated that the adsorption process in the present study was endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible in nature. The positive value of entropy further reflects the high adsorbent–adsorbate interaction. Thus, based on the findings obtained, it can be concluded that the biosorbent may be considered a potential material for the remediation of these noxious impurities and can further be applied or extrapolated to other impurities.
