Chemical characterization of automobile windshield glass samples for major, minor, and trace elemental concentration determination by INAA and its comparison with ED-XRF and DC Arc AES in terms of analytical capabilities and possible applications for glass forensics

Abstract: Utillization of minor and trace elements including transition elements and rare earth elements obtained by INAA method in conjunction with the cluster analysis for grouping study of automobile windshield glass samples for possible glass forensic applications.

“…Table 2 summarizes the results of the XRF study applied to the luminous EPN@EPX substrates to determine their chemical composition. XRF affords a more precise analysis for the elemental content of a certain substance 31 . Therefore, XRF provides a good analytical method for determining a substance composition.…”

“…A solution of Eu 2 O 3 (0.002 mol), Al 2 O 3 (0.2 mol), SrCO 3 (0.1 mol), H 3 BO 3 (0.02 mol), and Dy 2 O 3 (0.001 mol) in 350 mL of absolute ethanol was prepared. The resulting solution was exposed to ultrasonication for 1 h at 25 kHz, heating for 12 h at 95°C, and grinding for 2.5 h. The obtained residue underwent sintering at 1350°C for 3 h. The top‐down synthesis was applied to transform the phosphor micropowder into NAEA 31 . The phosphor micropowder (15 g) was placed in a ball mill vial placed on a vibrating disc, and then exposed to blasting with another ball mill and the vibrating disc for 22 h.…”

“…9 Sharma et al (2023) compared the analytical capabilities of ED-XRF, DC Arc AES, and INAA methods for glass analysis and identified some of the transition and rare earth elements as the key marker or diagnostic elements for distinguishing one glass from the other. 58 In continuation of the above-mentioned R&D work, the present work is focused on chemical characterization of various automobile (car) windshield glass samples from ten different car manufacturers by solid sample analysis techniques viz radioanalytical as well as nuclear analytical. Techniques employed are SEM-EDX for the identification of the major matrix elements, ED-XRF and PIXE for major and minor elements and some trace elements, in situ current normalized PIGE method for four major elements (Si, Na, Mg, and Al), and INAA method using reactor neutrons for major to trace elemental concentrations.…”
