Chemical characterization and protein quality evaluation of leaf protein concentrates from Glyricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala

Abstract: Leaves and leaf protein concentrates (LPCs) from leaves of Glyricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala were analysed for chemical constituents. The protein quality of the LPC, with or without dl-methionine supplementation, was estimated by using sixty weanling albino rats. Glyricidia leaves contained higher crude protein and lower crude fibre than L. leucocephala leaves, while the ash values were identical. In the LPCs, crude protein showed a good balance of amino acids and nutritionally important minerals. Th… Show more

“…The crude protein content of GPMNB, GUMNB and GUMNB compared favourably with and even surpassed those reported for urea-molasses blocks (Mata and Cambellas, 1992;Onwuka, 1999).The study also shows that the Gliricidia-based multinutrient blocks contained some valuable mineral elements-K, Na, Ca, Mg, P and Zn at levels considered particularly high when compared with most other foods , while Fe which is commonly deficient in many diets is fairly abundant. The anti-nutrients content were very low compared with most other foods (Agbede and Aletor, 2004;Agbede, 2006;Aye 2007).…”

“…Result of this work is in line with earlier reports of haematinic potential of plants (Agbor and Odetola, 2001;Alada, 2000). It also strengthens the beneficial effects of various plants as sources of protein (Castellanos et al, 1994;Fasuyi et al, 2000;Agbede, 2004;Fasuyi and Aletor, 2005;Fasuyi et al, 2007).…”

“…One way of utilizing fodder trees is to use them as feed to small ruminants as part of, or along with, multinutrient blocks(MNBs) (Sansoucy, 1995;Agbede and Aletor, 2004;Aye, 2007). MNBs create an effective ecosystem and increase intake and digestibility of low quality, high fibre grasses usually consumed by the small ruminants (Habib et al,1991).…”
