Chemical Characterization and Antibacterial Activity of Essential Oil of Medicinal Plants from Eastern Serbia

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate wild growing Satureja kitaibelii, Thymus serpyllum, Origanum vulgare, Achillea millefolium and Achillea clypeolata with respect to their essential oil (EO) content, composition and antimicrobial activity. The five species were collected at Mt. Rtanj and the village of Sesalac, Eastern Serbia. The main EO constituents of Lamiaceae plants were p-cymene (24.4%), geraniol (63.4%) and germacrene D (21.5%) in Satureja kitaibelii, Thymus serpyllum and Origanum vulgare ssp. … Show more

“…However, it is well known that several chemotypes of Thymus serpyllum have been described until now [ 26 , 27 , 28 ]; as differences in chemical composition have a notable influence on investigated biological activities, new data are of great importance. Besides, it is well known that EOs’ chemical composition, contributing to their medicinal value and being responsible for the biological properties, highly depends on many factors such as geographical and climatic conditions, harvesting, isolation techniques, as well as storage [ 29 , 30 ].…”

“…So far, published studies on in vitro antimicrobial activity of EOs originating from Serbia mainly examined different foodborne pathogens, such as S. enteritidis , E. coli , S. typhimurium , and Staphylococcus aureus [ 17 , 18 , 19 ], as well fungi [ 20 ], but none was focused on bovine mastitis pathogens.…”

“…These applications are mentioned in other traditional medicine as well (5), corroborated by experiments (6). Modern scientific investigations show that it possesses anti-inflammatory (7), antioxidant and antibacterial activities (8,9), as well as antican- Original scientific paper 124 cer properties (10). The aim of this investigation is to determine essential oil composition of A. millefolium sensu lato from Mt Rtanj and to develop a QSRR model for predicting the retention times of chemical compounds from the essential oil.…”
