Chemical Behavior of Phthalates Under Abiotic Conditions in Landfills

Abstract: The phthalates comprise a family of phthalic acid esters that are used primarily as plasticizers in polymeric materials to impart flexibility during the manufacturing process and to the end product. It is estimated that the annual worldwide production of phthalate esters exceeds five million tons. Plasticizers are one of the most prominent classes of chemicals, but unfortunately, they possess endocrine-disrupting chemical properties. As endocrine-disrupting chemicals, plasticizers have produced adverse develop… Show more

“…Biodegradation of PAEs by microorganisms is considered as the most effective process to eliminate them from the environment (Cousins et al, 2003;Huang et al, 2013;Gao and Wen, 2016). Bacterial PAE degradation is initiated by hydrolysis of the two ester bonds to the corresponding alcohols and phthalate (Liang et al, 2008;Gao and Wen, 2016).…”

“…Biodegradation by microorganisms is considered the main way of PAE elimination from the environment (Cousins et al, 2003;Huang et al, 2013;Gao and Wen, 2016). The initial steps of PAE degradation are identical under oxic and anoxic conditions and comprise the hydrolysis of PAE to phthalate and alcohols (Liang et al, 2008;Gao and Wen, 2016).…”

“…Biodegradation by microorganisms is considered to be the main PAE remediation process (Cousins et al, 2003;Huang et al, 2013), and has predominantly been studied in aerobic cultures (Liang et al, 2008;Gao and Wen, 2016). Degradation is initiated by the hydrolysis of PAE to phthalate and alcohols by esterases.…”
