Chemical Battleship: Discovering and Learning the Periodic Table Playing a Didactic and Strategic Board Game

Abstract: The periodic table is an essential topic in the teaching and learning of science at all education levels, as it contains information about the main physical and chemical properties of the different elements constituting the matter. However, becoming familiar with the facts behind the periodic table such as the element names and/or symbols, their metallic character, their electronegativity, and so on, may seem a tedious and boring task, depending on the approach the teacher uses. One way to stimulate students i… Show more

“…The results gathered after five years of investigation support that the students of 3rd course of secondary education opted, in the learning of science in general and the periodic table in particular, for the game as a tool since it presented motivational and fun features. This preference of the game by students over other types of strategies and tools for learning chemistry is in line with other previous studies (Bayir, 2014;Montejo & Fernández, 2021;Najdi & El Sheikh, 2012;Wood & Donnelly-Hermosillo, 2019).…”

“…Several pedagogical methods using games have been developed for student-friendly learning of the periodic table and characteristics of elements. Various types of games designed for learning the periodic table are mainly in the form of board games, card games, word games, , and recently, even video games . Most games focus on making it easy to memorize and understand the types and characteristics of elements based on the current periodic table. , However, to the best of our knowledge, no games have been developed to learn the logical process of how the periodic table has been developed.…”
