Pulp and paper mill waste, such as biomass fly ash and sewage sludge, is commonly disposed of in landfills. This waste can be valuable as nutrients and C sources for degraded soils. Ash and sludge samples were chemically characterized before ash/sludge pellets were experimentally manufactured for use as soil amendment. An incubation experiment was carried out with controlled moisture and temperature; nutrient input and N mineralization were evaluated at 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 d intervals using three pellet types with different proportions of ash, sludge, and gypsum (as a binder) and applied at four doses equivalent to 0, 10, 20, and 40 Mg ha -1 . Results indicated that the Alfisol that was amended with pelletized residues increased P Olsen and exchangeable K and Ca contents, as well as soil pH (p < 0.05) in direct response to the applied doses. Organic matter decreased during incubation at all the doses and pellet types (p < 0.05); however, N mineralization did not show a clear pattern during incubation. Nitrogen mineralization potential (N 0 ) was different depending on pellet types and application rates; Pellet 2 (10% sludge) exhibited the highest N 0 values, while Pellet 3 (20% sludge) had lower N 0 than the control. Pulp and paper mill waste can be used to amend degraded soils by creating sustainable use through pelletizing because it facilitates transport and can evenly distribute sludge and ash on soils in a single application.

Abstract. Soil improver, nutrient supplier and heavy metal stabilizer effects of ash residue remaining after the process for K recovery was examined in a soil incubation model experiment using two soil types (acid sandy soil and neutral loam soil) at 4 ash residue dose levels (0, 1, 3, 5%). Possible environmental risks posed by its application were also studied by ecotoxicological assays. As the result of ash residue treatment alkalinity of the soils has been raised in all treatments. In the case of acid soil even the use of 1% of ash residue proved to be enough for neutralising the soil pH. Ash residue is principally suitable for K and P supply and mostly in soils with poor nutrient content, where ash residue applied in 1% dose is able to increase the concentration of plant available K and P significantly. According to the results, the ash residue proved to be able to decrease the mobility of Pb and Zn which means that it can be an effective stabilizer in acid and neutral soils. Stabilization has probably occurred via adsorption. Based on the findings of the ecotoxicological assays, the use of 1% ash residue does not present substantial environmental risk.

The bioassay based on the bioluminescence inhibition of the marine bacterium Vibrio fischeri has been the most widely used test for the assessment of airborne particulate matter ecotoxicity. Most studies available use an extract of the solid sample, either made with water or organic solvents. As an alternative, a whole-aerosol test is also available where test bacteria are in actual contact with contaminated particles. In our study, different extraction procedures were compared to this direct contact test based on the V. fischeri assay and analytical measurements. The lowest PAH content and the highest EC50 were determined in water extract, while the highest PAH amount and lowest EC50 were measured in dichloromethane, hexane, and dimethyl-sulphoxide extracts. EC50 of the direct contact test was comparable to that of the methanol extract. Our results suggest that the sensitivity of the direct contact test equals to that of extraction procedures using organic solvents, moreover, it is mimicking an environmentally realistic exposure route.
