Chemical and Biological Investigation of Leaves of Polygonum plebejum

Abstract: The cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity of methanol crude extract and column fractions of the extract of the leaves of P. plebejum were examined by brine shrimp lethality bioassay and disc diffusion method respectively. The extracts showed significant cytotoxic as well as antimicrobial activities. Silica gel column chromatography of methanol extract of P. plebejum afforded a steroid. The structure was elucidated on the basis of spectral analysis, including 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR and also by comparing with data … Show more

“…Effective antifungal activity of a T. pallescens from certain regions in Algeria was also explained by their high content of thymol (49.3%) and carvacrol (57.7%), respectively (36). However, the carvacrol and thymol, which are the main components of the essential oils of Thymus , showed strong larvicidal efficiency (37, 38). This paper is part of an overall study aimed to determine the antifungal and antioxidant activities of natural floral resources of Algeria, to find new bioactive natural products.…”

“…The use of herbal medicine in the form of formulations/extract would have certain drawbacks because the inconsistent amount of main constituents in the raw material, therefore, raw materials should be used in the drug formulation after proper investigation of their properties, safety, and efficacy. [ 32 ] Based on traditional knowledge of herbal medicines, its scientific validation using standardized techniques may be a safe path of reverse pharmacology approach. [ 33 ] This may play a vital role in drug discovery, development, and therapeutics.…”
