Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), a Chinese herbal decoction used to treat ailments in women, contains Radix Astragali (Huangqi; RA) and Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui; RAS). The weight ratio of RA to RAS used in DBT must be 5:1 as stipulated as early as AD 1247; however, DBT's mechanism of action has never been described. Here, the estrogenic effects of DBT were investigated by determining the phosphorylations of estrogen receptor a (ERa) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk1/2) in cultured MCF-7 cells. The application of DBT triggered the phosphorylation of ERa and Erk1/2 in a time-dependent manner. In contrast to the effect of estrogen, DBT triggered ERa phosphorylation at both S118 and S167. This DBT-specific phosphorylation was not triggered by an extract of one of the individual herbs, or by mixing the extracts of RA and RAS. DBT-induced downstream signals are described here. These signals suggest the uniqueness of this Chinese herbal decoction that requires a well-defined formulation.

The paper documents on the uses of traditional medicinal plants used for treating human ailments in three villages of Ledong, a county inhabited by Li ethnic group in the southwest of Hainan Province, China. Semi-structured interviews, key informant interviews and participatory observations were used to collect ethnobotanical data from February to March 2012 and in July 2013. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Thirty native knowledgeable people were interviewed. The Li community uses 50 plant species in 36 families for medicinal purposes. The most common medicinal plant families were Leguminosae (14%), Compositae (6%), and Euphorbiaceae (6%), and the most common preparations methods were decoction (84%), crushing (38%), and poultice (34%). The traditional medicinal plants were mainly used for hemostasis (12.9%), body pains (11.4%), gastrointestinal disorders (11.4%), and trauma (10%). Twenty-four species of medicinal plants (48%) have never been reported in the literature of Li medicines. In addition, 22 species (44%) have already been studied by researchers and their extracts or compounds were good bio-actives. However, the rapid socioeconomic development in the county is the main threat to the conservation of Li medicine and has resulted in the decrease in the abundance and use of medicinal plants and associated traditional knowledge. Other factors accounting for a decrease in the use of Li medicinal plants like loss of plant diversity, change of land use, and threatened traditional knowledge were equally discussed.

Design, Synthesis and Antifungal Activities of 6‐Substituted 3‐Butylphthalide Derivatives against Phytopathogenic Fungi

In order to discover novel potential antifungal agents, a series of 6-substituted 3-butylphthalide derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antifungal activities against nine phytopathogenic fungi. Preliminary bioassay tests showed that five 3-butylphthalide derivatives exhibited more potent antifungal activities than hymexazol at the concentration of 50 μg/mL. Especially, 3-butyl-6-nitro-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one and 3-butyl-6-hydroxy-5-nitro-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one had significant fungicidal activity against some phytopathogenic fungi. The EC 50 of 3-butyl-6-nitro-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one against FS, FO and FG were 6.6, 9.6 and 16.0 μg/mL, respectively. The EC 50 of 3-butyl-6-hydroxy-5-nitro-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one against BC, PO, VM, SS and AS were 6.3, 5.9, 10.0, 4.5 and 8.4 μg/mL, respectively. The preliminary structure-activity relationships (SARs) of all target compounds were also investigated.
