“…The exine and tryphine constituents are contributed by the sporophytic tapetal cells (Dickinson et al ., 2000; Hernández‐Pinzón et al ., 1999; Heslop‐Harrison, 1968; Wu et al ., 1997). In wheat, genetic ablation of the tapetum or chemical interference in sporopollenin assembly results in male sterility (De Block et al ., 1997; El‐Ghazaly and Jensen, 1990; Schulz et al ., 1993). In this study, we found that the tapetal expression of TAA1 coincided very well with the microspore wall ontogeny with respect to exine formation and the production of Ubisch bodies.…”

“…Anthers of the WT and OsCER1A plants at different stages were fixed in 3.7% formaldehyde/acetic acid (v/v) and resin-embedded semi-thin sections (epoxy resin PolyBed 812, Polysciences) were made and observed as described by Zhu et al (2011) . For transmission electron microscopy (TEM), anthers were fixed in sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.2) containing 4% (w/v) paraformaldehyde and 2.5% (v/v) glutaraldehyde and sectioned as described by Schulz et al (1993) . The sections were observed using an electron microscope (TECNAI G2 12, FEI) at 100–120 kV.…”

“…They bypass the issues like identification and restoration of male sterile line associated with GMS (McRae, 1985) and is alternative method to generate male sterility in plants. They act as gametocide and target the male gamete by creating abnormalities, thus effecting development of pollen, its viability and its dehiscence (Cross and Ladyman, 1991) without affecting the female fertility.…”
